Eating Disorder Treatment

Eating disorders can affect people in very different ways, so treatment needs to consider the individual rather than the diagnosis alone.

Whole Form Psychology provides evidence-based psychological treatment tailored to each person’s needs, age, circumstances and stage of recovery. Treatment may involve close collaboration with GPs, dietitians, psychiatrists, paediatricians and other members of the treatment team.

Clinical focus

Anorexia and Atypical Anorexia

Individualised support for restrictive eating, fears around food and weight, body image concerns, and related thoughts and behaviours.

ARFID

Support where restrictive eating relates to sensory sensitivity, feared consequences or limited interest in eating.

Bulimia Nervosa

Support with binge eating, compensatory behaviours, body image concerns, and the thoughts and emotions that can contribute to these patterns.

OSFED

Individualised treatment for significant eating-disorder presentations that do not fit another diagnosis.

Binge Eating Disorder

Psychological treatment addressing binge-eating patterns and contributing factors.

Body Image and Self-esteem

Support where body image and self-worth contribute to distress or eating difficulties.

Eating disorders don’t often occur in isolation

Anxiety, intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviours, low mood, perfectionism and difficulties managing emotions may also be considered as part of treatment.

Evidence-based approaches

Treatment is tailored to each person’s individual needs and presentation, drawing on the therapeutic approaches that are most appropriate for them. For example:

  • Family-Based Therapy (FBT)

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - Enhanced for eating disorders (CBT-E)

  • Specialist Supportive Clinical Management (SSCM)

  • Adolescent Focused Therapy (AFT)

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
